Hi All, I am trying to put together the numbers for a marketing budget for the first several months of 2012. Anyone got a range of what I can expect to spend on direct mail, leads, ads, etc? By the way I am in Piedmont NC. Also, what marketing is working, not-working for you? Thanks in advance.

Marketing works differently for different people. Some like to cold call, because it's practically cheap and effective but time consuming, while others go out and network and gain referrals or some like direct marketing for those that want to send out targeted messages and have the clients respond.

A combination of all is your marketing plan. Do some, target your message, and track it to see if results are good. If results suck, refine your message or work another avenue.

It is definitely going to depend on what you are planning on selling. I don't think we can give you an idea until we have more information.

I intend on selling life and health.

Should I have any marketing material made up for friends, family to let them know of my new career, on a formal basis? Thoughts?

I am currently part of several 'mommy' groups and I want to start there. A reach of about 150 women right off the bat.

A side note: getting my med supp license, hopefully mid 2012.

Thanks again for all the feedback.

Life and Health is a huge field. To be successful I suggest you pick a product and become an expert on that type of insurance first. Once you have that mastered then begin looking at other products to offer.

I would not use any kind of "marketing materials". A simple note letting them know you are now an insurance agent and a brief description of the kind of insurance you will be specializing in. If they are interested they will contact you.

I would never start with family and friends.

What is a med supp license?

your warm market and quality introductions to your friends friends are your best bet initially.

The thing is you need to know how to sell effectively before
hitting your warm market because you can burn your most powerful asset rather quickly without guidance.
