Need Help Placing

Sure John,

A great example is right here on this thread with the Americo Ultra Protector.

The applications you are using in Indiana and Kentucky have, according to the different comments from around the country, different age stipulations for diabetes from what you are working with.

So the advice that you gave about using the UP 1, apparently didn't make sense to the poster, not because what you advised was wrong, but because the underwriting rules and the applications were different from what you use in the markets you are working in.

We see this in other ways. That's why, for example, when I called into 5 Star and Lafayette for PHI's the other day, they asked for the application code to make sure we're all working from the version that has been authorized by that specific state insurance department.

Usually the only difference in applications from state to state is things like the fraud statement or a living benefit rider. I don't know of any company that writes the underwriting questions differently in various states.

I believe that as a general statement you are right, the majority, or vast majority, of the differences between the app used in one state vs a different state are related to disclosure differences etc.

That being said, there are apparently some different apps being looked at here from Americo as someone said the app in his state has an age reference, while the apps for IN, KY, CA and CO do not. Who knows why there is a difference - that's just what we see.

I also recall that a couple of states treat graded and / or modified policies differently than the NAIC standards and so apps policy availability May differ for those type situations.

But again to your general statement you are correct.

Not exactly....

There are some generally minor differences in the questions for some states. A quick one I can think of is Georgia. Apparently everything is limited to a 10 year look back. I haven't seen an app that goes back further in Georgia. Also, states that don't allow return of premium or graded will have different apps. Of course, that is just generally moving everything to knock-out and eliminating duplicates if one time frame was knock out and the other was graded.

Now as to the age 50, I call BS on that until someone can reference the state where it is asked and/or produce the app. I have seen apps for lots of companies from lots of different states. I have never seen such a variation. If that was of concern to the company, they would ask it across the board.

Other than some rare state specific things, if someone qualifies for level with a company in one state, they are going to qualify for level in every state.
