i just got an offer from new york life. they have not asked me to do the project 200 yet. here's the problem. i barely know 20 people... i have not been good at keeping in touch. if i did i would know a whole lot more people.
my intentions are to do a lot of cold calling and door knocking...
realistically can i be successful doing this? what would you recommend someone in my situation? i have enough savings for 6month to a year...
i do have a family depending on me.
how can i make sure that i am successful at this? or how can i give it my best shot while starting with a project 10:GEEK:

You could have success by cold calling but that would be inefficient and perhaps frustrating. Purchasing leads or otherwise getting prospects that have expressed some kind of interest would make you more sales faster.;)

My best advice would be to join everything you can neighborhood association check craigslist and newspaper for upcoming events and talk to everyone grocery store, dry cleaner, the guy at the gas pump next to you whatever. Just fill in yourtime with C/C or canvassing. It's better than doing nothing. Also, I don't know about your finances but you will probably need low hanging fruit to keep you moving. I am not in the insurance business yet but I have done alot of C/C at other jobs.

20 people? Come on man. Unless you've been under a rock for your whole adult life or in jail ... Im not buyin'. And if you truly want to have any modicum of success in this industry - you'll need to stop fooling yourself right now - today.

What your really telling yourself, and us is:

I only have 20 people .... "I feel comfortable talking to about life insurance"

Believe in yourself. Believe in your product and what you do for people. If you've ever taken a call from an uninsured widow looking to see if you setup a life insurance program for their husband or delivered a $1m death claim check [ well really it was a check book ]- you get belief or religion or what ever in the life insurance biz - quickly. Ive done both.

Have faith in you and what your work is. You'll find enough folks if you really want to.

My website has free information on networking and generating referrals - comes in your email every week. Surely there will be an idea you can use to meet new people and network? There's resources out the ARSE on the internet showing you how to implement networking ideas.

You'll need to decide straight away if you're willing to step outside of your comfort zone. There's no money inside the comfort zone - I assure you ... not in this biz.

It sounds to me like you are prejudging folks. I'm sure you know far more than 20 people. You need to get in touch with folks you haven't spoken to in a while. Start building relationships.

I've been in your shoes. My advise is to use the local newspaper for prospects. You will target people that just got married, just had a baby and some life changing events in the newspaper.

Email me and I will send you my newspaper prospecting idea.

Or.............Maybe you need to get hooked up with a agency that can offer you support, leads, and advice. You will do alot better having someone to fall back on at first. There are alot of folks willing to put you to work, if you are willing to sell to your fam and friends. Leads, leads, leads are the life line to what we do, if you hook up with an agency that cares about you they will make sure you have a source. With that being said, if after looking at all the stuff here and still need a way to get out there let me know.
