New to the Insurance Sales Industry (despritely Need Guidance)

Re: New to the Insurance Sales Industry (despritely Need Guidance

Hey Allstate,
I tried posting yesterday but it says it needed approved by a mod and they haven't got to it yet. I am recently licensed in PA and can answer questions for you on that part. Let me know what help I can provide.

Hey thanks pgh!

Yeah I've tried posting a few times and got the same thing, not sure why it does that. Where in PA are you? are you local to Philadelphia? Also for the record to avoid confusion to my Alias on here AllStateProspectiveAgent is what I was going for, not AllStateProfessional...obviously I'm not a professional lol.

Are you newly licensed or have you been doing this for a long time?

Newly Licensed. Life/health/annuities in Dec 2010 and P&C last month. So I am very familiar with everything that you are going to need to do. I am in Pittsburgh by the way hence the PGH...lol. What questions about licensing, testing, etc can I answer for you?

Oh nice! Pittsburgh! I grew up by Point Breeze. So I am a hardcore Steelers Fan! Too bad about this past Super Bowl.

My questions:

1. I took the Mortgage SAFE exam about 4 or 5 months ago and failed. Is the P&C License test hard?

2. How many sales a day on average would you say you get?

3. And lastly, what can I expect to make in my first year of selling Insurance?

Re: New to the Insurance Sales Industry (despritely Need Guidance

Yeah it was ashame about the steelers but they exceeded everyone's expectations for the season so I can't complain.

1. I can't compare the SAFE exam as I have never taken it. The P&C test isn't easy but not extremely hard. How were you in school? Have you done your classroom or self study program yet?
2. I am a brand new agent working from scratch. It will be a long up hill climb but I am targeting 2 customers per week with an average of 2.6 agreements per household. I think this is a realistic goal.
3. I cannot answer that for you. Based on the pay plan it looks like very little.

I know a lot of people here have suggested that you go indy and I bet it's great once you are there, however my suggestion would be the opposite. I say go captive and learn on someone else's dime. The state exam will only prepare you for about 5% of what you need to know. Who is going to teach you if you go indy?

What is your career background besides sales? Have you ever been commisioned based? Have you ever been self employed? What do you know about cars, homes, retirment planning, taxes, medical? I ask all these questions because they will help guide you in the right direction IMHO. I personally have many years in auto sales as well as being self employed for 5 years so I had a small foundation to build off of.

NO ONE…at least I am not…suggesting that he goes INDY. What we are suggesting is that he finds a IA- Independent Agent to work under...the same idea as working under a EA - Exclusive Agent...but with more companies and generally better commissions.

I am sorry, I mistated that, although there was 1 person that did suggest he do INDY. What I meant to say was that in this forum in general, a lot of people suggest that he go INDY based on what I have read on tons of different posts. I agree that an INDY agent would be helpful on one hand, however I would also say that a captive situation may have better training available. It all depends on his background, capacity to learn, and income desires. I am sure that you would agree both options have positives and negatives about them.

Indy would be a good choice if I have money to invest and to hold me over until I start making a promising income. Unfortunately I don't have that luxury. I need to make a steady income, and I need to do it yesterday.

No-problem...an I agree for him and many new people to try to start out INDY is not a wise move...

Hey Allstate, if you have any specific licensing/testing type questions I can help you with them. That is where I will be most helpful to you as I just did it all over the last few months.
