Question for Agents with ADD/Autism

I was diagnosed with ADD my freshman year in high school (93). I was prescribed Ritalin and, after I complained about not being able to sleep, Cylert. It did nothing good for me, but not sure anything would have because I didn't really care about school/focusing back then. I stopped taking it pretty quickly and can't say I gave it a fair shot (I have the same attitude as you about medication) and have no experience with the current medications.

When I was 21, in college, it just clicked. I had a roommate/best friend who studied hard, and he'd give me a hard time about not doing the same. That was a first for me; I never actually cared about doing well in school before that, and wasn't close friends with many people who did. By the end of that year I was a reading machine. Marijuana did help (and still does), and I found I needed 0 distractions when reading. I also need to re-read things when I find my mind trailing off, much like you described catching yourself not retaining info. But I'm still a reading machine today. I think learning brute forcing it COULD work was key; it god rid of that feeling of inevitability/hopelessness that the ADD would win out. That might be key for you.

I also had huge success cold-calling early in my career, in multiple fields. ADD is often accompanied by obsessiveness, and it sounds like you've got that too (the learning everything about any topic), and you can absolutely use that in cold-calling. I became obsessed with knowing the best way to explain anything and having more activity than anyone. It's like a super power.

Like Travis said, cold-calling isn't a great way of doing business anymore. Regardless, the need to maximize activity remains. Whether it's contacting leads, door knocking, whatever. I'm guessing you also get a feeling of dread around not succeeding, learn to use that to your advantage. Engaging in "the grind" eases that anxiety.

Of course, you'll probably end up having issues learning to shut it off to enjoy the fruits of life, but that's easier to deal with than being broke. Pot really works for that, too.

Wow. Reading this is like talking to myself. Which of course is a constant in my head. Especially at 2AM.

I don't have time for a better answer at the moment.

However, my short answer- a couple hits of my mind dominant hybrid vape in the morning does help me settle in to work. I also agree that, for me, SI is easiest to start and finish a case. Not a lot of thought process.

Now, where was I?

Don't work for yourself yet. You don't have money, you don't know the business, you need structure.

I absolutely plan on working for an Independent agency if I can get my foot in the door. It's the only way I'd get access to carriers anyway.

Pot has helped me focus for 50 years.

Have you tried Ritalin?

I think I might have as a kid. I don't think I reacted well, but we have not given medication much a chance since then.

Others have mentioned marijuana here as well. Maybe I should look back into it. I just have to not get stupid high. That has worked great for me with pure manual labor jobs that don't require a lot of thinking or talking.

Like Travis said, cold-calling isn't a great way of doing business anymore.

I hear mixed things on this. And I do have to admit that my first job at Bankers life, they forced us to cold call horrible aged leads which have been called a thousand times over the years. We even had the worst script in the history of ever that actually opened up with "I'm so and so from bankers life and Colonial Penn, how are you doing today?" Even with all that I set more appointments working there than I ever did working at other companies or on my own.
So I want to be clear. I'm not talking about blind dialing the phone book. Do you think cold calling is really dead assuming I have a somewhat qualified list of say "new business owners", or "new parents"? I've seen that the FE/med sup community seems to do very well cold calling turning 65 leads.

So my intention was to get a good script, and work a list from a good data source. I've looked at Yourliststore.com and similar sites. Basically unlimited number of somewhat qualified people for me to call for $50 a month doesn't sound too bad.

It's a matter of people not answering the phone. To consumers, it won't work. That game has been ruined.

To businesses, it absolutely works. In fact, if I were in your position, I'd find a job prospecting for a successful commercial agency. Your ability to learn the details of programs will be best used there, your willingness to do the brute prospecting is more rare (and thus valuable) there compared to other areas, and the $ prospects are highest.

The Integrity FMO's have a free T65 Locator tool that show all the T65's. No phone #'s, just names, addresses and birthdates on a map. Great for Cold Door Knocking, or mailing..

I like YourListStore.

I think that Cold Door Knocking is coming back.

Agreed. The smell, the controlled buzz, all why I opt for edibles.
The immediate high is the only thing I like better about smoking. COPD is why I switched to edibles(when they became legal), and I prefer them.

I'm going to have to get some mints or gummies to keep in the car. Now that it's getting warmer, my white chocolate's melting.

I occasionally buy extreme aged leads (5+ years old) and cold knock them and their neighbors. For some reason, that works well even though those leads are pretty close to glacier temperature.
