I self insure plenty of things. Maybe he ran the numbers and felt that self insuring his real estate investments made sense.

No. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night. But I could see a scenario where it could make sense.

Yeah, I guess when you're like 80 with a few on the coast of Florida, they're paid off and you don't care if anyone inherits them lol

There are two types of Self Insuring for a property really... Self Insuring the property and Self Insuring the liability. I would never recommend self insuring the liability.

Yeah, I have seen some reasonably sound arguments for self insuring the property. Not many, but some.
The liability can get into some big numbers, and the cost is usually pretty low, so that can be a hard argument to make.
Why do you label him "stupid"? Seems a little mean spirited to me.
