Last night I was at the gas station filling up gas and this guy drove up near me in a really nice sports car. I normally always give out business cards while at the gas station. But man, I was in love with this car and I could tell this guy had some money. I read something that I thought I would try on him. I went up to him and asked him if he was in the insurance business. He said no and I said great because I am. Here is my card. He laughed and I hand him my card and asked him if he had a card and he did and he gave it to me. Next thing I know we are talking about his cool car and I'm asking him if he will take me for a quick ride in it. He said yes and away we go.

That car in 3d gear hit 80 mph and I was screaming and laughing at the same time. We got up to 110 mph.

Now I have a new friend and also got an appoint to go see him.

Every stranger you see in public can be a new client. Try and talk to everyone that you can and at least pass out some business cards and ask them if they have one that you can have also.

I can still hear my father screaming at me the secret to selling insurance.

SEE THE PEOPLE!!!
SEE THE PEOPLE!!!
SEE THE PEOPLE!!!

You may sell I policy there that I wouldn't have, but what you did is just not in my nature. When I'm working, I call on people. When I'm done working, I don't. There is no way I can be "on" all the time.

Very nice story. But...I hope my kids will NEVER get in a stranger's car who proceeds to drive them 110 mph. Actually, I wouldn't do it either and I do a lot of goofy things!

And I'm a little like Full Throttle. As sad as this sounds, I don't even carry business cards with me and never talk to strangers about my business, websites etc...

Thats the difference between top producers and average producers.
A top producer can and will always turn it on when situations present them selves.

Top producers don't go for car rides with strangers to sell them insurance. I'm not knocking Mark for it but top producers do it a different way.

I agree "But Having Said That" I was referring to the statement about not always being "ON", and was just saying that top producers can always turn it on.

I was just agreeing with the point of this thread not the car ride but prospecting anywhere and SEEING PEOPLE.

The three producers I started with at my intial firm, one was a TOT producer (north of $500,000 FYC and over $1,000,000 total comp for the year) and two COT producers. None of the three were always "on". They did what needed to be done during the day, then went home and didn't think twice about business. Small sample size, but it does show it can be done without talking to everyone you run across in a parking lot. This is not meant to be a knock on Mark.

I never turn it off. It is like hunting or fishing to me and I enjoy it. I love to run my mouth to just anyone and I'm not afraid to walk up to some stranger and just start talking.

Also, any man that has a cool car, wants to show it off and talk about it.
