Hello All,

I am still new to the P&C world. I am a prodcer at an independent agency in NJ/NYC.

I would like for some of you to share your experience with me when you entering the business. How did you get the ball rolling? How did you start bringing in business right away? If you were cold calling, how many calls were you making? What worked best for you?

I am looking for a general idea of how you managed your time early in the career. Whether you were just a producer or you were starting you own agency.

Thank you!

Welcome to our world.

Gotta have a game plan. I would recommend working for an independent agency first. Learn as much as you can, it's not as easy as it seems. Build up your clientele, only then think about opening your own agency.

Thank you.

I am not in the process of thinking about opening my own agency at this point.

More interested in knowing what it takes to bring business into this door.

Pick 2 or 3 niches that you know and that you have the carriers to be competitive on. Join the trade associations and get active so you know the other industry players and the professionals (Banks, CPA's, Attorney's, etc) that service those niches as well. Cold call and X date a
large database of prospects and work them. You have to "water the bamboo" for a few years and eventually your sales will explode.

Are you a commercial producer? I'm going to assume so. I agree, pick two niches that you are comfortable with and go after them hard. Become an expert in those particular fields. Don't try to be all things to all people.

I am big on referrals. Start a referral program that rewards people for sending others to you. Make sure you check with your state DOI for regulations but if you reward everyone the same for simply sending others to you, you will be fine. Do not tie anything to the sale of an insurance product...just reward for the act of referring.

Great advice!

I think I am going to focus on habitational & BOP's since I believe we have some good carriers for that ( plus some nice premiums).
