Site Traffic - How Do I Compete with the Big Dogs.

Just don't buy into the backlink hype:

The End of Link Building as We've Known and Loved it - Search Engine Watch (#SEW)

Google's onto it and purely IMHO, anyone who currently ranks by "gray hat" backlink building will not be happy that much longer.

Links are soon going to be made near irrelevant. Within possibly 1 or 2 more years almost no weight will be given to backlinks.

And absolutely get a WP theme as your site. Traditional website building is near dead and also IMHO within a few years will be totally dead except for very unique website design requests.

I predicted this actually a few years back, but soon there will be no "SEO." It will be near impossible to game the system because a system is being put into place as we speak to let the "people speak" about which sites are valuable and which are not.

How do you compete with the big dogs?

You don't. (At least not with a new site.) Learn what a long tail keyword is of you want to get traffic in the near future.

What you do is find a niche. For most sites that support an agency, that means that you focus on your geography and line of insurance.

In another words, you compete for "Connecticut health insurance" instead of "health insurance." If people in your area search by county, or city create some pages that use one of those as a geo-qualifier.

Also, the name of the companies you represent may be a good stand in for your line of insurance.

Better start reading yesterday and today's articles - not last week's. Although not literally you know the tide is starting to turn (based on current articles) and "here's, 1,000 backlinks" isn't gonna do squat in the near future.

I'll say this much - watch dangerous tactics that might work today but might end up causing a great deal of harm in the future.

I agree that changes are coming that may or may not stick around, but saying that backlinks are hype is just plain erroneous.

Think about this though as some food for thought, compared to other niches, insurance---many people are not FB "liking", tweeting, or google + "oneing" any insurance url/topics compared to things that people actually want to share like anything celebrity related.

Most social signals/votes to ins sites are bought. So I wouldnt give up on SEO tactics that work quite yet.

Don't get me wrong. You have to do what works today...today. I guess what I'm saying to anyone heavily relying on links is save your money or be prepared to change.

Ok, that helps, so what is your advice to anyone who wants to start an seo campaign to generate leads right now?
