My son who is 26 and just moved back in with us has gotten his second DUI and lost his license til July of 2011.
He is still on our automobile policy.
I have PC with a company in Alabama called ALFa.
What should I do next? So for our insurance company hasn't raised our rates, or taken any action. I notified them when he received his first DUI, but not the second.
When I called the agent she told me not to worry it would turn up on their report of some sort and at that point they would change our rate.
I want him off my insurance soon as possible.
But, how will that affect him when he gets his license back as for as getting coverage on his on?
I thought maybe some of you P&C guys could give me some info on how to best handle this.
Thanks,
Phillip

As for what you should do next with your son, I'll leave that to you... on the insurance side you need to get him on his own policy and have him EXCLUDED from yours...NOW.

Mendota will probably be a good place to look. I've been using them for a bit and have been happy so far with the service.

Let me preface this answer with the caveat that there are a LOT of state specific rules in situations like this. I don't know the rules/laws in Alabama. You really should ask a local agent.

Your son can be excluded off of your policy. In fact, chances are, when the carrier pulls the MVR prior to renewal, they will likely non-renew your policy unless he is excluded (carriers work differently on this). Might as well as save the money now and just exclude him.

In some states, when you have a lapse in insurance over a period of time, you pay a higher premium then you would if you had continous insurance. There is probably no way this additional premium would be more than keeping him on your policy from now till July.

Eventually, he'll need an old beater car, liability only, to get the SR-22 to get his license back.

Thank you very much for the help.
I have only been coming to this board for a few weeks now, but have found 90% of the people that are on this board to be very helpful and sincere.
