Does anyone know of any competitive Group Life carriers that offer product in CA to groups 5+ other than the health insurance carriers that typically offer the product?

CA is a tight market... It is pretty much dominated by a handful of carriers... i.e. Blue Shield of CA, Anthem, Pacificare etc...
