Starting From Scratch

Hi me and my real estate broker are starting an insurance Agency from scratch and I am looking for advice. I am in the process of getting my P&C license and then hope to get the LAH license for NYS. I need advice on which companies to approach that would be willing to take on a brand new agency. Any advice or help is appreciated.

If you start selling life and health first, you can save yourself all of the expense and hassle of a physical office. P&C will need the office. Frankly, I don't think P&C is worth the trouble.

How do you plan to market? I think that is the biggest thing you will need to work on and do.

Ahh yes, another realtor turned insurance agent. Another real estate office thinking there is gold in the insurance business....

Sorry, I've seen this about a 100 times in the last year. For some reason, it doesn't seem to work very well when a real estate office decides to open an insurance branch. I'm curious as to why, though I have my suspicions.

I agree with coachd, you have to have a marketing plan in place, and that will then tell you what carriers to go after. Also, realize it will take a while (measured not in days, weeks or months) to establish a P&C agency that makes any real money.

I am more then aware that I'm not gonna make money right off, I'm just looking for advice not a sarcastic reply. I don't know how things work in California but I live in upstate NY and its a whole different ball game here. There are no Real Estate offices in our area that also provide insurance so this in new here. We are a small real estate office not one of those big franchises and we have a very good reputation in our community for our high ethical standards and customer service. Most all of are business is referrals but we also have a very effective marketing plan. I have been looking at SmartChoice but I'm kind of iffy about them.

I already have an office I can use so that's not a big deal. But thanks for the advice. In your opinion where do you make more money though Life and Health or P&C?
