Starting Out in P&C

No if you leave state farm the book stays with the agent or company.

How bout if I stay with them. Would other carriers appoint me if I have a decent size book?

That way I can keep my book with that office and establish another book on the side.

If you're a team member with a State Farm agent, then you dont own the book - the agent does. State Farm prohibits their agents to do any sub-contract with outsiders or even their team members.

If you're appointed as captive agent by State Farm, they will not let you be appointed with anyone else.

What about finding an independent agency and negotiate some terms with them that will let you leave with your book if you stay with them for X amount of years?

Depends on YOUR Contract you make with the agency owner, you can write that contract how ever you want, depending on what each side agrees to

Not if the agency/owner is wth State Farm / Farmers or several others. In those cases, the owner doesn't own the book, the company does. The agency can't give you ownership in it.

I assume you meant if you are dealing with an independent agent, then yes, sometimes you can strike a deal. Ironically, if you work through a cluster, I don't think you can there either. For instance, SIAA would have to approve you selling part of your book and they would want a cut of it. Most clusters seem to work this way.

Dan are u part of SIAA?

if i work for this IA and he is already appointed to to several carrries, what would be the point of trying to get appointed later on my self?

Is it because I will be getting higher commissions off my book that I already established?

once again sorry about the newb questions..
