STD is a short term disability plan with elimination periods of 8 - 30 days and benefit periods up to 2 years. Most are coordinated with LTD and SS if the benefit runs beyond 5 months.

A few years ago I saw one offered on an individual basis but it was withdrawn after about a year due to lack of interest (sales).
