Thank GOD for Nationwide!!!!!

But I was taught the dumpster driving and posting signs on the power poles was the best marketing methods.

Just remember, always avoid the State Farm office in the same strip mall as a Chinese buffet. You have to have standards. Its almost as bad as the Edward Jones office sharing space with the taco joint.

I would hate to be the Nationwide agent that has to sit there and watch his/her business go away. If I am taking some, I know some of the agents with a lot more experience than me are taking a large chunk too.
I have noticed that most of the Nationwide accounts I run into are usually under 10k premium. The bigger accounts are definitely not going to them.

Yeah they suck in PA too...for personal lines they are a little better than they used to be since insurance scoring took place. But most times we clean their clocks when we go against em.

Nationwide is very competitive in select markets in So NH....to the point where I usually walk away.
But they are the sub $10k accounts

INTERESTING, I am working with a contractor now, only a $3000 account, but if I get it, it will probably be about 12 or so that I have switched from just one local agent..

you stole 12 from one agent? You better watch your back! LOL

Or approach him to start producing under you! :D

I have seen them write the Biz auto at personal lines rates up here.
Add in that you'll be chasing many small contractors for $$ or getting them reinstated......I don't chase that class.
But I do write a few.....
Glad it is working for you down there.

Somewhere around that amount, mainly all contractors. My biggest competitor for the larger accounts is Cincinnati Insurance and BB&T.

To be honest, the contractors are a lot of work and only a small few appear to be completely reputable. Since I am new to commercial, I figured this would be a good group to start with but I am gradually adding more SIC codes.

Have you ever done anything with hotels?

Direct writers are direct writers... you will hammer them for years and then they will turn around and drop rates (or your carriers will raise rates) and they will start killing you. Any direct writer can make a good living if they know what their company does well and they exploit it. In my area... if Farmers is on a small hotel (200 rooms or less) or if State Farm is on a chain of sandwhich shops or ice cream shops... you might as well just walk away. I had a guy with 19 subways... SF wrote it for $16k. They will eventually get burned on it and pull out.

I write a few contractors...but I am picky and size them up fast.Got burned early on. Make friends with the good ones.....they will let you know who the bottom feeders are.

Hotels are tough. They are either class 9 /wood frames ( that , as Bertolino said,Nationwide and StateFarm kill on) or big chains that have a property manager or are handled out of Corp HQ. I am working a few but it is going to take time and work to get in( and I don't know if I'll have anything for them if I get in)
