Some of the carriers are Medicare only.

Thanx Somarco. Looks like Anthem is a major force in the insurance world. ObamaCare customers are probably only a little baby slice of their pie.

I thought Anthem was gearing up to be the country's single payer

They will most likely be the last player standing. I speculated this would happen soon after Ocare became law.

There will still be pockets where regional players, like KP will hang around.

If you look at states that had GI and community rating before 2014 BX was and still is, the only real player.

And they don't pay commissions once the other guys have bailed.

They paid commission?:nah:

BX did not pay commissions in states with GI and community rating. No need to when they were essentially the only player and had 95% of the market.

GREAT ARTICLE! Thanks!! As a lifelong Conservative I have a real prejudice in regards to the NYT so.............. gota keep an open mind. Weird thing about Hurricane Andrew( I changed hats and worked it as an Adjuster 3 months of Hell but great $$$$$$) is that it missed it's target Miami, and struck south, then on to unpopulated Everglades, had it Miami Beach the greatest$$$$ loss in US History.

Hit to Miami would have been very bad, for sure. As it was, like the article says, the losses from Andrew exceeded all the property insurance premiums ever collected in the area. Similar to Katrina, where the losses were higher than all the national flood insurance program premiums collected in the years since the program started, in 1968.

Cat bonds scale to the size of the financial market vs the size of the insurance premium volume annually. The financial market is vastly larger, multi-trillions instead of billions in insurance premiums. Financial markets can absorb catastrophic risks, and it's impossible to charge high enough insurance premiums to anticipate massive CAT losses.

The hard part is to find good math and convince others of occurences that human nature tends to deny.
