The Eye Popping 2016 Obamacare Rate Increases Are Out

You have some good points for sure. However, the only things you didn't mention that NY NJ and MA didn't have before were subsidies and increasing tax penalties. They still may have had a disproportionate amount of sicker vs healthy, older vs younger signed up with plans right now. I don't know how it will eventually play out, but I certainly hope I'm right even if takes a little longer.

Actually MA did have subsidies and it almost bankrupted the state in its first year. In the first year of the MA Individual Mandate, the state offered subsidies and what happened was the state saw unsustainable red ink and had to end it. The feds can't afford it either but they aren't afraid to run budget deficits.

Subsidies will decline shifting more of the cost to the insured.

Healthy people, even those with subsidies, will opt out.

Obamacare will become a giant risk pool.

You can hope all you want but this "terd" really stinks and will never get better, rates will never come down.

That guy takes number crunching to a new level. So what's his point?

He's pro-Obamacare. Has removed a couple of my comments. But it's the only website/blog I know of that posts raw state numbers on a regular basis.

Edit to add: Near the bottom of that web page you click on the state name to see premium changes by carrier.

100% paid in 4 states? I'm not buying it.

Sort of:

1. That was from 2014 (I have to overhaul/update some parts of the site)

2. The reason they show up as "100%" is because those states were only *reporting* enrollments *after* their first monthly premium had been paid in the first place. They obviously had other people who didn't pay up, but those weren't reported as part of the total at all.

This year only Massachusetts and Washington State are doing it this way, and I believe next year WA is dropping it as well since they're offloading their billing system the way most other states have.

Frankly, it would've made my life much easier if every state did this, but it is what it is.

I don't know what comments of yours I've removed, but I appreciate the shout-out regardless :)

I'm actually a single payer advocate, but feel that Obamacare is still better than the previous system, FWIW.
