Well, it's working.

Just got off the phone with an "agent" selling Medicare Advantage Plans for the second year. All she did was complain about how much she's going to have to work, and for less than she made last year.

Phrases she used:

Oh, Lord, they can't be workin' me just as hard for less money!

All these new regulations, makin' my head spin.

When I explained to her that the reason she won't be making New Sales commissions off someone who is just switching from one MA plan to another, she just gave me

:GEEK:

I told her, "You're not re-educating them, you're just moving them from one company to another. Why would you expect to be compensated as a new sale for that?"

Her response:

It is a new sale, with the new company!

Then we got to the Scope of Appointment form. Wait 'til you hear this!

I told her she could send someone a Scope of Appointment form, have them fill it out, sign it and date it, then call her back to set the appointment, hand it to her, then she can be on her merry way of presenting MA's.

This was, of course, after I told her to send it to someone, once they made the initial contact, and have them fax it to her, or e-mail it to her. To that, she condescendingly told me that, "ain't no old folks know how to operate a fax, or use e-mail."

Then she tells me that she bought some Med Supp leads, and how can she use them to sell MA's. I said, "Well, you can call them, and inform them that Medicare Supplements have recently made changes to their offerings, and can you come by and discuss it." If they bring up MA's, you can tell them that, by law, you can't discuss that until you have their permission first (see Scope of Appointment earlier).

To wit, she replies, "so, if I talk about MA's, and they were Med Supp leads, I don't have to follow the 48 hour rule, do I?"

:wideeyed:

Uh, yeah.

She then asks me to put all this down in writing for her. I tell her to visit Medicare.gov - The Official U.S. Government Site for People with Medicare or Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and do her own research.

Naa, she's too busy.

Final result: she's going to keep selling FE (surprised!), and maybe go back into doing hair from her home. This Medicare stuff just ain't payin' her enough.

Thank you, CMS. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

YES!

That brought a smile to my face. Thanks for sharing.

One down and what, another 9,999 to go?

I prefer to think of it as "culling" the heard.

Why would anyone think it is much less work to move someone into a better plan than it is to see a "virgin" to Medicare Advantage? If you do your job right, you have to compare at least 2 different plans - their current one and the one you recommend. When you see someone not in MA plans, you only have to show one plan which hopefully is the one that fits that person the best.

To receive a renewal commission for all that work is unfair. At least with Med Supps, the new and renewal commissions are identical with most carriers. We are paid for our work and don't have to put up with all the extra bullshit that is required by CMS.

I am busting my ass to help my clients be sure they have the proper PDP plan and for all that work I increase my commission from $10 to $20. I still do it because I owe it to my clients but I don't know how much longer I can afford to work for free.

Anyone who can defend the scope of appointment form, the 48 hour rule and all the other crap obviously has it too easy. I already work hard to help my clients and adding unnecessary hardships is helping no one.

The specifics about moving them from one MA to another is simply that the first MA no longer offered a zero premium, whereby the second one did.

Other than that, it was identical coverage.

What would tha great "reason" be for getting only half commission?

I've done 14 MA plans this week. Every one of them was moving from another MA. Every appintment took, at least 1 and 1/2 hours to do. Why should be paid half commission for doing the work?

Your throne may be just a wee bit too high.:err:

At least 1 1/2 hours? That has to be including drive time and phone time to set up the appointment right? If you're spending that kind of time in a household just switching from one MA to another I would say you are probably doing overkill. If I couldn't switch someone from one to the other in 30-45 minutes maximum, I think I would re-evaluate my presentation techniques.

Scope of Appointment letter can be signed right at the appt now, if you can't get it back before hand. CMS changed the rule last week on that one. You just tell them to check everything just in case. If you also didn't know you can add LTC and Dental to your scope of appt letter.

My appointments are running me about 45 minutes each. I am loving this year... agents are getting out of this niche left and right.

DOnt get me wrong... its been harder no doubt, and my income will be greatly reduced this year... but with the new renewal structure Ill be making more money than I ever have by year 3...

Thats not to say that Ill probably be on Medicaid by year 6 LOL!
