This Business is NOT Hard

Don't think it's so difficult to make alot of money in the insurance industry because it's not. Basically it all goes back to the fundamentals laid out years ago. Hard work, honesty, proper networking, and a few things like that is all it takes. Of course product knowledge and integrity goes without saying.

Within three and a half years of starting my own agency my annual income reached $100,000. By the fourth it went to almost $175,000 and the fifth went over $250,000. I did nothing special, no direct mail, purchased no leads etc...

Just go to work!! Good Luck!

Let me guess. You going to tell us all how you done this in your book. How much is your book?

I've seen the same thing said a million times, and then it follows you can find out how I did it in my book for only blah, blah, blah.

I don't see how all of you could have missed it.

He posts his name and phone number on telephone polls on busy streets stating "life, health annuities" and the contacts and sales just naturally follow.

It is amazingly simple concept, if only agents would do this more frequently, they would save a lot of time and trouble.

Not to mention, there's absolutely no work involved in managing an agency with that revenue stream. Everything is done automatically for you by the carriers.

I believe it.

If you have the contacts to write the business its there.

In the group health side if your writing cases in the 25-50 life range. You might only need 40 cases to hit that $250,000 mark. If your writing 100 life cases the commish on one group could be $35,000 or more.

I don't have a book. I don't have any great secrets. Actually many people on this board can laugh at my personal accomplishments and income level. That's ok.

I am only trying to let people know that it is very possible to make a nice income while working for yourself if properly motivated.

If there was any one thing I did that made the difference it was going out and introducing myself to P&C agents that didn't write health insurance and asking them to send those calls to me. I promised to take care of them and i did. Now, five years later that business represents approx 25% of my annual income including renewals.

You guys that are heavy hitters i respect your ambition. For me, i just wanted to make a nice living so my wife could stay home with our two small kids.

So the P & C agents liked you so much, they all sent health insurance leads to you....man, you are one awesome agent and perhaps the smoothest talker on the forum.

Its always easy to write the most unhealthy prospects for health after the P and C guys cherry pick those with no health issues isn't it??? If you get a handful of P and C guys giving you any steady stream of healthy candidates consider yourself lucky - I think very very few health agents have this type of referral network...Many P and C agents can be very finicky...and write the health business when they can...Lotsa P and C agents by default try to write Golden Rule all the time with RIDERS all the time.

Here is a twist.

I am always trying to revamp the agency and try new things. As a matter of fact I began a great relationship with a life guy (12 years with NYLIC) and we have accomplished some amazing production over the last year. It took us a month or so to get my corporate NYLIC license and licensed with his other carriers and then it was on...

He has total access to my 3800 names and I have total access to his 2700.

I was actually thinking of starting a thread asking you health guys who, how and where I should start to prospect for a willing health agent in my area.

One thing that I have learned over the years is that I do what I do very well. However I'm the first to admit that when I try to spread myself to thin it is the client that suffers or simply goes to another life guy somewhere else, or another health guy somewhere else, or another whatever somewhere else.

Heck, if I can provide that product line to my client with an agent that specializes in that type of coverage (right in my office), I will take the split in commission every time rather than send them down the road.

It ties the client to our agency (with the cross sell) and provides better retention.....The client gets better service, I make more money. WIN-WIN

To that end. If there are any health agents (in Albuquerque) that would like to engage in talks about this type of relationship. 505-899-7000
