Would a routine Dr.'s office visit for a cold or flu be covered under the Preventive Care Benefit option? Is there a list of what's considered preventive care? Would anyone here recommend it for a family of (4) including a newborn and a 2 year old? It costs an additional $62 a month. All advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Lou

If someone wants a preventive care benefit I use a different carrier. Aetna & H1 include preventive benefits in their plan at "no charge".

Carriers like GR (UHC) and Time who want to charge extra are missing the boat. The cost of the benetif, when spread equally over all policy holders is nominal . . . much lower than making it an add on benefit at an additional premium.

And the benefit of encouraging regular check ups is the reward of early detection of many medical conditions that can be treated at a lower cost vs. waiting until symptoms actually manifest themselves.

All carriers have stats on early detection, but some take them to heart while others do not.

A cold or flu would not go towards the preventative benefits. That benefit is for:

ob/gyn annual exam including pap test
mammogram
psa test
general physicals
etc...

Again, any type of illness, regardless of how minor, would not count towards wellness.

Correct.

Because it is not.... "preventative"

I had this call on Friday from a client who wanted to know what her preventative care benefit was because she was feeling sick. She wanted to go to the doctor to "prevent" a more serious illness.

Gotta love it...

I'm just curious, how can an agent not know what the benefits are? Isn't that a part of our job? It's online at the click of a button for GR, it literally brings you to the specific benefits.

It's that simple.

I tell my customers in WI, if you get a physical every year, then you take the preventative. If you go every two years, it's a wash. Any more than that and you are better off putting the money in your HSA and paying for it when you go. I do push it a little though because I think they should go and if they are paying for it, it's kind of an incentive to go.

I went to a WPS CE seminar the other day. The first topic was Preventative Care and it's benefits. When I asked the question "If it is a known fact that by having a preventative care package reduces claims and lowers cost, then why would any company not offer it at least as an option. Since WPS doesn't offer this benefit, you could have heard a pin drop. The guy teaching was from WPS and said" In all honesty I have no idea why". I hope he still has his job!
