Universities Slash Teachers' Hours to Evade ObamaCare | Obamacare | Fox Nation

A new piece in the Wall Street Journal reports that many colleges are cutting back on the number of hours worked by adjunct professors, in order to avoid new requirements that they provide healthcare to anyone working over 30 hours per week. This is terrible news for a lot of people; 70 percent of professors work as adjuncts and many will now have to cope with a major pay cut just as requirements that they buy their own health insurance go into effect:

Interesting question... How many hours does "fill in the blank" really work?

A professor is only in the class for maybe 16 hours, but what about grading papers, writing exams, research, etc?

A pilot might only be on the clock for 100 hours a month, but what about all that time preparing the flight, reviewing weather and the manifest, etc.

Wow. That's big news. We've heard it from restaurants and hotels, but to hear that colleges are cutting hours like that is really big news. In the news article, it uses the example of a 41 year old father of 2 who makes $40,000 a year. In his case, he'll get a sizable subsidy, so it makes sense for him and for the school. But he also loses $2,000 in salary due to the cut in hours. And... he is losing his health insurance before Obamacare kicks in 1/1/2014, so he'll be faced with expensive COBRA rates or IFP if he can qualify. Unintended consequences.

I love this total chaos in the health market. Lay the blame at the door of the white house. This is good stuff.

Similar to insurance agents..we spend 4 clock-hours preparing for and then filling out paperwork before/after the 1 hour appointment. That's why we're "full time" agents...Yes?

ANN, YOU ARE RIGHT. This University hours-reduction thing is BIG. Between these employer actions and an increasing number of health insurers not participating in the exchanges, ObamaCare is starting to wither away before our eyes. The US Govt hasn't even funded the "subsidy pot", or talked about where those billions of dollars are this moment.
