the more content you have under a domain the better. subdomains are for separating content for direct traffic. google will rarely pick up a subdomain for organic results.

and the info on the 301 redirect is a simple fix with most hosting companies. it's either a check mark under the redirect or a simple data input under domain redirect. i use wpengine for all wordpress sites. bluehost, gatorhost, dreamhost, etc just have a check box for the redirect - not a big to do.

all a 301 redirect does is take the traffic to one domain or the other.
