Using a MAC to Sell Health Insurance

Just left windows today, now running Ubuntu & Wine...

I'm a huge fan of Ubuntu, but would never want to use it as a primary computer because it's not stable or compatible enough. Anyone that thinks it's hard to find software for a Mac should give Ubuntu a try! Something as simple as installing a program to watch dvd's or play videos online can take some time, even for someone with experience with both Mac and PC systems.

I ran my agency for a couple of years using Linux and I would again IF there was software to sync my iPhone with a local address book/calendar as well as Apple's MobileMe. I loved Linux (MEPIS, Sidux were what I used.) Linux was totally stable so I don't know what the poster is talking about, but it has problems with peripheral hardware such as printers and scanners. Indeed, about 3 years ago I bought a new printer/scanner and while I could get the printer to print with Linux, I could not get the scanner to scan... and at the time I was a Linux guru.

Thus I grabbed my wife, got in the car, went to the Apple store and got myself an Apple computer and wife picked out a lappy, got home, plugged it all in and everything worked. I never looked back.

I'm may be the only agent on the planet who runs the bulk of their agency on the Mac platform. True, I have Windows via the Parallels ($80) virtualization software so that I can run Ohio National's quote engine... but except for that the Mac is fine. There is a ton of software for the Mac (see Version Tracker site) as well as the Apple download site)

As long as you are OK with keeping your anti-virus/spyware software updated and you are OK with the "kludge" that Windows has become over the past 20 years, I see nothing wrong with using it for your agency. Most agents DO use Windows and bottom line, you use what you like using. I really enjoy the ease of use and the security of Apple. Yes, it cost more, but a) I can afford it and b) you get what you pay for.

Since I keep my agency database on my website via SugarCRM and I am virtually paperless via using the Apple MobileMe cloud server, for $99 a year, it all "just works."

One day Linux will be "ready" for the small biz, but right now it is somewhat problematic for that role. It's great as a plain old desktop operating system used mainly for mail, web, and word processing (via OpenOffice.org) but to run an insurance agency you need either Windows or OS X. Neither is a bad choice.

Just you and me!

Talk about a great dream. Linux rocks. Never really made a big hit outside of web / server hosting. Good stuff though, love it.
