Which Designation?

I posed this question at the end of another thread but thought I would ask it as a separate topic. I am getting into annuities, and am looking at different designations to better educate myself. I am not securities licensed, and do not plan to do so. I've had recommendations of RICP and CAS. Any thoughts between these two, or other recommendations? I appreciate any input.

Designations are very academic in nature. If you are fully-functioning as a producer, then go for it. If not, designation studies won't help you. You'll get a lot of "book learning"... but it won't add money into your pocket until you have your habits and skills down.

For skills on annuity sales, I'd recommend the Insurance Pro Shop.

As far as designations, I'm more partial to The American College due to their Regional Accreditation... whereas the Institute of Business and Finance has no such accreditation.

In addition, I'd recommend looking into the CLU designation and taking the retirement planning, income taxation, and estate planning courses as a part of your education.

Depending on the market you want to a designation can be useful at times, just not most of the time. However, I have met few people who "regretted" obtaining a professional designation. Especially the ones such as CFP or ChFC.

I like the College For Financial Planning's CRPC (chartered retirement planning counselor). They are a regionally accredited school so it is on the same level as American College. I have heard really good things about the CRPC. I am currently working on the CRPS (chartered retirement plan specialist). I will get my CRPC after I finish my CRPS.

American College used to actually own the CRPC designation but they sold it to College for Financial Planning. Now American College has the RICP which was their replacement for the CRPC.

Another benefit of the CRPC is that it is half the price of American College courses!
