My understanding is that now no invite is needed. It has certain advantages over FB from my perspective, especially with regard to lengthy comment threads. The circles feature is better IMO than anything FB has come out with in that regard.
It may take a while before it becomes a big thing for businesses, but that is coming too, from what I understand. For the first few years FB was thought to be for kids and it took several years before businesses were really able to utilize it in a meaningful way.
