Do you need both p&c and life/health licenses to work for the Big Boys?
(allstate, state farm, famers, etc).

I was considering this option as oposed to being independant...but i only have my life health license.

thanks very much...

They usually let you come on board then work for the license while you are there, study as you go along. Usually. But, all licenses must be gotten in a certain timeframe.

With most, you'll need to get your 6 & 63 (sell mutual funds) licenses as well, again, this can be done later, but will have to be done.

If your just starting out, want to know more about the business, you can almost always walk into a job at your local agents office. A large number of agents are always looking for dedicated, licensed help. You can then leave those jobs at pretty much anytime, and pursue your own career when you are ready.

Either way, you can start collecting a lot of info. Call the district managers of the various companies, setup interviews. They'll tell you exactly what you need, and what you can expect.

Thanks guys....

Do you think Allstate or State Farm require BOTH licenses?

I would think so, ask an agent, get with an agent sometime, or chat with a manager. You can talk about all this stuff with these people before you do it.

You'll need to have a conversation with a district manager for the companies to understand how their programs work. Ultimately, yes, they will require both licenses (any major P&C company will). Do you need it to start? Probably not, but it depends on the program.

Sorry, no clear answer, but you can easily have the conversation with the district managers of the various companies. As they walk you through their particular program, you'll see how it works, the various stages, and the requirements for those stages.

Each company will have a different target market. Make sure you know what you're getting into. If your state allows for insurance scoring, the main big companies will go after the people that are married, a house, 2 cars and kids with good credit. I went from captive to independent and so far, it's the way to go.

Yes, eventually. I had an agent for a similar company tell me that life sales is what really sets apart the top agents with his company since they all should do fairly well with auto, etc.

I don't mean to come across as harsh, but it is a lot more difficult to become an agent for Allstate or State Farm than it is to get a life and health license, so what's the big deal? If you are talking about what has been termed sharecropping (i.e. working for the agent for a salary, etc. but not getting paid much in commissions) I'm sure if they hire you they will pay for whatever licenses you need anyway. Just going to work for them like that, P&C will probably be enough for now and they will likely help you with the L&H later.
