Working in the Inner City

MrBIG -- I sincerely believe doing an actual drive through of each ZIP code is the only way to get a "gut" feel of whether or not you want to work a particular area.

Take a day (or night) to drive through areas you might feel would work well. You'll probably find both poor and wealthier areas you'll want to stay away from (assuming you're doing FE).

I am wanting to do some mail drops in a couple of larger cities a moderate distance from where I live.

Chances are that mail drops in smaller, more rural areas would be far more productive than mailing to the BIG city. Folks are more laid back and sincere and easier to work with. Also not so beat up as those in the city. But, I realize that one must experience some of this for themselves. With that said, Reardon's suggestion was a good one about driving the neighborhoods first; if you must.

Last evening there were only eight shooting incidents in Philly. In one case an innocent victim was caught in the crossfire and killed----a mother of two children.

Arnguy, shouldn't you be posting this in the Grandchild Policy thread...?

Now that was rather insensitive on my part I know, but couldn't help me-self. Certainly the mortality rate on children in these inner city's like Philly would have to be staggerly high...? Not a good bet for the life company, one would imagine.

I guess this goes w/o saying that you won't be out door knocking in inner city Philly any time soon...?

No neighborhood is as good as it looks (richie rich is useless to me) and no neightborhood is a bad as it looks... Drive a "field" car. My six year old ford fusion is just about as new as I would recommend. I worked with a guy who drove a junky pick up. Did so well that he bought a Lincoln. Sold nothing after that...I dress down but semi-official,dress shirt w/rolled up sleeves, in other words working schlub, clipboard and name tag. Keep your wits about you. There are places I skip and I've sat on a lot of pissy sofas to know...

I just wanted to say I agree with this post I don't show up in a suit to sell FE or Insurance at all...I am as real as it comes and that's why I have clients who have been with me since day one.

Boy...and those pissy sofas and dirty homes and roaches trying to make sure nothing gets in my clothes and Lawd have mercy the dogs!!!....Also I sell in the bad car and drive my real car on the other days of my life...I am ok with that...Going to buy me a prius this year...need to save on the gas.
