As why a Republican can't win Mass, I believe there's something in the ocean water that makes it easy for Dems to win. Think about it, you've got New York and the upper east coast and you've got the whole west coast. I'd throw Chicago and the great lakes region in there too. By the time the waters get warm (in the south), the power of the water fades.
As far as governors go, I don't think governors and mayors are as divisive as senators, congressman and presidents. They tend to reach across party lines a lit easier.
