Ok, my step-father owns a multi-million $ insurance agency that is very successful. He is very busy and wants to help me all he can to be a great insurance agent. His agents are top notch and work nationwide. So, needless to say he wont just hire some youngster like myself. I am trying to learn all I can without asking him a million questions.
So, answer me this...
How can I prove to him that I am serious and really want this?

Should I get licensed and work for a agency first and get a good BOB?

Should I try to do it on my own?

Intern?

Any help is greatly appreciated..

I have an appt. with him tomorrow.

Don't reinvent the wheel. Don't show up and change things that are working for the agency.

Have him show you what they have been doing. Learn all that you can from him. It is okay to tell him that you don't know much about this business, but are willing to learn. He will be able to tell that you really don't know much, if you try and fake it.

What are some good questions to ask? I plan on taking notes and asking some good questions that will show him I have been doing my research..

I started very young in the health insurance industry and the first 3 years I worked a 2nd job at night.
You might want to entertain that idea and pitch that to your Dad while you are building your skills and block of business.

Get licensed and start at the bottom.

Ask him if you can shadow the agency for a week or so?

Ask him what kinds of goals you should set? 1st year 2nd year and so on.

Ask how you will find clients?

Be willing to work customer service to understand products. Work problem claims and learn how to resolve them.

Ask your Dad what to do. If he has been successful then he will be able to tell you what its going to take for you to be successful.

Just work your way up the ladder. Also know that others there will resent you for your relation to the boss, so make sure that you EARN the respect of everybody there through your work ethic and not only by being son-in-law.

By writing good policy's and respecting the other agents..?

Not so much that, but more by outworking them. Nobody can say a bad thing about the agent that works the hardest. Anyone who truly works their ass off will make a killing in this biz, its also important to work SMART. Don't continue to do things that don't produce results. Basically, copy the most successful agents there, and do more of what they do, and you'll be the best.
