Are med sups doomed ?

Medicare is doomed financially..........so are anything attached to them.
Social Security same........
Mathematically impossible to correct with 2 exceptions Hyperinflation or National default on debt.

So enjoy the ride as long as it lasts on the MEDICARE TRAIN. Doesn't really matter if you're on the Supplement car or Advantage car.

Medicare is cheap, especially MAPD plans.........ummmmm

[EXTERNAL LINK] - Medicare News from NAHU - 08/14/2023

I've explained to my clients that the plans are paid by Medicare, usually $1,000/month or more -- in some cases, considerably more if the plan qualifies for a bonus under the quality bonus program established by the Affordable Care Act.

The Kaiser Family Foundation reported that the majority of Medicare Advantage enrollees (75%) in 2022 were in plans that were receiving bonus payments.

Wondering what plans in your area are paid? CMS publishes ratebooks and supporting data. Here's a peek of plan rates in Autauga County, Georgia:

  • For a beneficiary who is enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B, assuming the plan qualifies for a five-percent bonus, the plan would receive $1,177.70 a month plus the beneficiary's Part B premium of $164.90 for a total of $1,342.60 or $16,111.20 a year.
  • For a beneficiary enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B, assuming the plan qualifies for a 3.5% bonus, the plan would receive $1,147.63 a month plus the beneficiary's Part B premium of $164.90 for a total of $1,342.60 or $15,750.36 a year.
  • For a beneficiary enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B and assuming the plan does not receive any bonus, the plan would receive $1,077.47 a month plus the beneficiary's Part B premium of $164.90 for a total of $1,242.37 or $14,908.44 a year.
  • For a beneficiary enrolled in Medicare Parts A & B and assuming the beneficiary has End Stage Renal Disease, the plan receives $8,229.63 a month plus the beneficiary's Part B premium of $164.90 for a total of $8,394.53 or $100,734.36 a year.

Autauga County, Georgia:

Typo?

There is an Autauga county in AL but not that I can find in GA.

I won't check your math and just assume it is correct.

I don't know if that originated with you or someone else, but the "Medicare is cheap" is a bit meaningless.

Cheap . . . as compared to what?

Certainly MAPD premiums are mostly cheap ($0) but that does not mean those plans are inexpensive. The only way to make that kind of statement prospectively is to KNOW how sick you will be and when that will happen. It would also help to know how LONG you would be sick and the type of treatment.

Obviously one would be in a better position to address that statement retrospectively, AFTER their health changes and the have recovered.

Or died

Med Sups aren't going anywhere.

It's got a lot to do with where you're located. Down here in the South, the majority of the people I talk to are conservative and Republican. They want less government control not more. And that carries over to their healthcare.

Spoke to a lady this week turning 65. The first thing out of her mouth was Don't talk to me about those damn Advantage plans, I know how to manage my risks.

I'm sorry if it comes as a surprise to you, but me and @somarco get those kind of calls every day.

I am confused by this... Less government control?? Isnt OG Medicare controlled/administered by the govt?

Yes. Less control.

OM is regulated at the state level. Advantage plans at the federal level. But you already know this so I'll reword it.

Conservatives want less government intrusion when it comes to their healthcare. Less CMS regulations, less open/closed enrollment periods (as in ACA) less etc.

These aren't my math numbers or text, just copied from site. And I was being ironic about how cheap MAPD is for the gov't, not the beneficiary.
