Bill Would Split Broker Comp from MLR

Nice to see another bill introduced, since the Fall 2012 version was shelved to make room for more important matters...Election, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc..

But, I do wish they would change the term Medical Loss Ratio (MLR) to Critical-to-Fluff Ratio (CFR). Insurance Agent Commissions are not part of the Medical Care. Even the best salesmen couldn't convince someone with half a brain that insurance agents' pay should be on the Medical versus the Administrative side of the equation.

On the other hand, you can make the argument that we are a CRITICAL component of an insurance company's front-end and ongoing success. Unfortunately, every department within a given insurance company could say the same thing. But, as a matter of degree, agents are more important than the brochure design department...aren't we?

"A step in the right direction. Brokers (experienced ones) are needed more than ever with the Open Enrollment starting in less than four months. Consumers won't be happy with "Community Navigators" attempting to offer "advice."

That guy knows his stuff.

Ignorant agent here that has never sold health insurance (I don't count MA products as health insurance):
Presuming the plans were standardized and everything was GI, what value is the agent? If a client goes to the exchange and all the carriers are available, what are the benefits to working with an agent? Let me be perfectly clear, I'm not saying there isn't, but if you had the ear of congress for 10 minutes, why what arguments would you use to help them better understand the value of an insurance agent?

Josh, I wouldn't need 10 minutes. Remember, our Congressmen and Congresswomen were too lazy to read the bill before they passed it. I'd just give them my business card with a link to their state exchange on the back. Within 10 minutes of him/her visiting the website, they would call and ask me to PLEASE stop by and explain the plans to them.

For example, take a look at these California plans: http://www.coveredca.com/PDFs/English/CoveredCA-HealthPlanBenefitsComparisonChart.pdf

Before you even get to the plan choices, there are pages and pages of application questions. Congress would appreciate the help of an agent/advisor. And for the vast majority of consumers, the need for our guidance is guaranteed, Josh. I'm adding people to my list every day who want me to help them when the time comes.

I don't think many people care much about the benefits of their health insurance. They want to know the maximum out-of-pocket and the premium. They will find a meeting point between premium and out-of-pocket that they are comfortable with.
