It would be really easy to spend 23K on a simple funeral especially if a family goes to one of the corporate owned combination funeral home / cemetery locations ran by one of the Big Funeral Chains. The funeral directors and sales people are well aware and trained to go after the life insurance proceeds and work closely with insurance assignment companies. My conspiracy theory mind says this dysfunctional family probably has a contract with a few extra plots for themselves leaving the common law husband in the cold and the amount he is willing to pay the $15,000 is the total cost of her funeral and cemetery.
