It's the people that weren't prepared, that concerns me, as well as the effects of the economy, especially from people who are living paycheck-to-paycheck.
Glad California has such tight gun laws I feel safer.

the government told people to give up their guns. So who gave up their guns? Of course the law-abiding citizens. So, the law-abiding citizens were disarmed and the criminals, of course, still had their guns.
not everyone has the space or the money to prepare emergency stockpiles of food, etc and then discard and replace unused items on a rotating basis.
I had no idea of the current situation until I went out to buy some things on Friday. Grocery chain rationing of some items has helped to spread out availability of items to more people. I observed this first hand on Friday and Saturday. Also, some of the grocery store traffic you are whining about is due to government reactions to the situation. With all the school closures, Moms and College Students, among others are having to have more food at home for preparation for family meals. Workers that may be used to just eating out, are also having to deal with unanticipated home cooking due to food venue closings.
Increased pressure on food banks and charitable meal serving places should start happening soon, if it hasn't already. And if the crisis closes those down too, local governments are going to be under severe pressure to find some quarantine friendly food distribution option for those who have relied on those services in the past.
Everybody knows that CNN is Fake News."New York (CNN Business)A week ago, Darrin Dixon wasn't all that concerned about the coronavirus.
Now he's losing sleep over the prospect that the virus could cost him his food truck and catering business, which provides three jobs, including his own.
Sales at Dixon's food truck, KC Cajun, plunged this week as businesses in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, where he's based, have shifted to working from home. His catering business is having cancellations like he's never seen before.
"I know I'm stressed. I've had sleepless night. It's just scary because we don't know what we're going to do," said Dixon.
His situation is a harbinger of the problems facing the US economy from the coronavirus, which could be far deeper and more widespread than they initially appeared."

What kind of lunatic would buy food to just throw it out? You buy non perishable food like beans, rice, pasta and canned food, then eat it before it goes bad and replace it. These workers that are used to eating out? That's super expensive. Not eating out is one of the reasons I was able to retire so young. If they had the money to eat out (and likely buy smart phones and name brand clothing too, I assume) they could use 3 nights of eating out to buy a lot of canned and non perishable food. Space to store it? My secondary stash of food is under my bed in our vacation house. So, unless you live in a closet, don't eat terrestrial food, and don't own any name brand clothing, or smart phone, you had the means to buy and store some rice, pasta and canned food.
I am not particularly interested in eating spam, canned green beans and beenee wenee for the rest of my life, just to rotate an "emergency" food stock.
If I can get to the store every day or two, I can often use coupons and sales or find marked down meat, produce and bread items to buy that will allow me to eat "fresh" food. That is much nicer than continually trying to eat up a month's supply of a limited variety of canned goods one might lay in if they have to think of the possibility of no electricity for a month or so.
