Did I Make the Correct Decision?

This is my first post after much research through this site. I need a little reassurance on my decision.

I am currently studying for my life and health licensing and have committed to American General Life and Accident. I have not signed a contract, yet. After entertaining Farmers, and some others. I felt this was the best fit. I like their "Quality of Life" product and feel it will be a good sell with folks in my local market.

I have also been entertaining the possibility of MassMutual. They have international products. Through my wife (she is Peruvian), I can get good leads from her family on people there with good disposable income. I can't sell internationally through AGLA. I thought I would accept the training through AGLA for I have no sales experience. Then later try to contract with MM to sell internationally.

My question is did I make the correct choice to start my career with AGLA vs. Farmers?

I had a local indie agent try to bring me in with him. Unfortunately he did not want to train me, he just wanted me to get my license, steer clients his way and give me half the commission. That would not help me to learn, so I turned that down.

Thanks in advance,

HTW

That sounds like a good decision to me although I don't represent any of those companies.

The decision to turn down the offer he presented to you is definitely a good decision. Sounds like he was only interested in "using" you rather than helping you.

I agree with your assessment. He came across as a friend, until he presented me with that working arrangement. I didn't bite.

I still am not clear if I chose correctly to drop the offer from Farmers. I did not like the reports of them I read on ripoffreport. If I am going to provide a product to my customer, I do not want the company I represent to stab me in the back by providing inferior service to my clientele.

The DM for AGLA provided a good scenario for me to begin including base salary while I learn (26 weeks) I am sure this some how is a draw, and will not make me lazy, but it is a security I won't get with Farmers.

That is why I want to partner with MM after I initially get training from AGLA.

I think AGLA will be a good fit for me here in the states. Then after experience, I could partner to sell MM products internationally.

Thanks for that feedback. I made the decision based off of many posts I had seen in these forums, plus all the negative feedback I saw on other research concerning Farmers customer service didn't help. I found nothing negative about AGLA. I was just concerned mostly about proper training and a company in which I could be proud to work.

These are the type of contacts it takes to be successful in the life insurance business.

Don't waste them.

I agree, but they are international. I need to get started domestically to build a base. I need to increase my Spanish level to talk with them comfortably. I can gain experience with AGLA through the process, then pick up MM to sell internationally. AGLA only provided domestic policies.

I see. You are just going to "rip" them for their training... and then jump to MassMu? Well, so much for honesty and integrity. Since there isn't is all that much of either in this industry to start with, you obviously will fit in well.

You are making a mistake. MassMu is by far the better company and the one that you can start a career with and stay there forever... if you like captive life.

Besides, who is to say that MassMu will want you later on? And don't you think MassMu will realize you stayed with AGLA just for the training and that they will figure you will do the same again with them?

In answer to the title of this thread... NO... you made the wrong decision.
