If you aren't currently using Google's Local Business Listings, you're missing out. Currently, Google does not charge to add your business to this directory.

Here are 7 tips to get the most out of your listing and help you to rank in the "top 10" or "10 pack" on the first page of Google:

1. If your business name has keywords in it, make sure and use your full business name. This is huge! Just don't be deceptive or stuff keywords in the title, as this is a violation of Google's policy.

2. Use relevant keywords in the company description. Once again, do not be deceptive here, but do a little research and make sure keywords that describe your business are listed in the description field.

3. Make sure your logo is included in the listing. Also add any other additional photos you have. The more, the better.

4. Choose business categories that relate to your business. You do not have to solely use the categories provided. Google does allow you to create custom categories by changing the text. This is yet another opportunity to use relevant keywords describing your business.

5. Adding a coupon helps with your listing's ranking, but it's a little difficult in the insurance world to offer a discount due to a little thing called rebating. How about a coupon for a "free insurance review" or "free consultation"? Just don't represent to the client that you normally charge for this.

6. Google loves reviews. The more the better. These should be from real customers and not faked. Here's an idea... after you've helped a client and saved them some money, send them a quick thank you email and/or card and ask them to provide a review. Most will be happy to do this. You should also link to your listing from your website and encourage reviews.

7. If you have any videos about your business on YouTube, make sure and add those to your listing. If you don't have any videos about you're business, you need to create some or have some done. Google loves videos and considers YouTube to be an "authority site".

Normally, you dont need to submit your website to Google Local. Their system picks up your listing from online yellow pages such as superpages.com and yellowbook.com. Also, any reviews you may have on any online source such as the 2 mentioned before and other sources such as angies list, hotfrog, etc. will show up as reviews in your google local result.

But, if they don't already have your listing, submission is a great way to start. FYI - a website is not necessary to post information on Google Local - you just need a phone number & an address!

Good points. If Google has created a listing for you already (simply do a search for your business name to find out), then you must claim your listing. After clicking on your listing, there will be an opportunity for you to do this.

You will want to claim this so that you can optimize your listing (as mentioned above) and appear in the top 10 or "10 pack" locally.

VacantHomeIns is correct about reviews from other sources... they will show up in your Google listing as well.

As pointed out above, a website is not required for a listing, but is HIGHLY recommended. Google will consider a listing with website links to have more relevance than listings that do not. It's crazy to do business without a website these days anyway... ;)
