I have an engaged couple that just bought a house but only the guy is listed as the owner. They are living together and have a baby. The engagement ring was recently purchased and they drive each others cars. The home and the guys car is insured with Travelers. Do I call my underwriter and ask for an exception to add his fiancé to the policies as a named insured? How do I handle this? The guy wants to insure the ring. Also, the girl has a condo that they are going to rent out, so I want write that as a landlord policy. Will I get an exception or is this a tough luck situation? Are insurance companies coming around on this stuff?

Odds are, if the underwriter was ever an agent, you'll get told to do what I used to call an 'insurance wedding' and put them down as married. Then she gets to use the excuse 'I married him just for the insurance'.

Some carriers have categories for this, calling them significant others or some such arrangement.

I'd call and ask, then I'd do whatever I feel is right. Check the underwriting guidelines, it might already be in there for what they consider a spouse (significant other).

When I was selling life insurance I was a bit less presumptuous, but I was there when many couples that had been together for years got engaged. "Congratulations, you're engaged".

Some carriers have another option like "domestic partnership" that we use for this situation. I believe any carrier would make an exception for this example to allow both to be named insured

Thanks for the responses everyone! I called my uw and she allowed it.

It's pretty easy to make an insurance interest argument here and put everyone under one household and list them both as applicants and insureds.
