Favorite health carrier

well the only consistent force in MD has been BX. Go figure at $18/mo comp and plans with RX capped at $500 - no published UW guidelines.

I'm not sure if GR has ever pulled out of MD - Fortis to Time while refiling the 192 series to the preferred 2000 series almost doubled the rates from '04 to '05.

Aetna came in strong in '05 - literally doubled the rates within two years. Coventry came in '06 - accept/reject - no RX on $2,500 or higher plans.

Celtic has basically nothing special to offer. We have Mamsi, a HMO but it's captive.

I MI, GR (or anyone else) does not rider. They are rating now.

For some reason, they don't use the United Network so it is not a national network.

Scripts are capped at 3K, but you can buy up to unlimited.

Decent rates.

What happens to the policyholder when a company exits the state?

Depends.

If they are still in the business, the policies stay on the books until they age off. The exception would be such as happened to GR in LA where the DOI did not allow the carrier to renew.

If they leave the business (MOO, Guardian, Penn Mutual, etc.) they may continue to service the business for a stated period of time (usually 3 - 5 yrs) or they may keep it indefinitely.

When UnionMutual left the MM market they continued to service their block for several years.

More often what happens is they continue raising rates in an attempt to drive off the remaining block. Even carriers still in the business do that.

Here in GA as BX closes out the old policy series they just start giving out 60%+ rate increases every time the moon changes until they run everyone off.
