Feedback Needed...ambitions of Going Indy

Good evening to you all,

First of all, let me say that this forum is absolutely fantastic and I have no idea why it took me so long to find it. The only other insurance forums I've ever really looked at were the ones for Insurance Journal, and those were a drag. This forum is brimming with relevant info on the business and there seems to be every cross-section of the industry represented here, which is great!

My purpose here is just to soak it up as I am planning on going fully independent soon. Some background on me - I'm in my mid 20's, and come from a family of career agents. I've already worked in the biz for 5 years as a producer, CSR, accounting... you name it. I'm not married, no kids and don't have much in the way of liabilities or expenses. I have a second income so my need/expectation right away is roughly $1200-1400 per month from insurance. I plan on being 100% mobile but there is a office desk that I can use for free if needed.

What I'm confused about is which markets to attack and what lines of insurance to specialize in. My plan in the beginning is to pick up every little piece of business that comes around, be it personal auto, home, renters health or small business, but I know that isn't going to be very viable for too long and would like to get started on a legitimate marketing plan right away. Can anyone offer some general suggestions on how to be successful with a targeted market as an agent with my profile?

Also, are there companies out there that are easy to get appointed with? I'm especially interested in the individiual & group health side as that seems to be the greatest "need" out there at least in my area, any advise on that? I don't have much experience there. Even just comments are appreciated, am I making the right desision? I figure if the being involved in the business hasn't completely discouraged me from wanting this, then I want it badly enough to succeed. I've witnessed all of the negativity, all the lawsuits, etc., and that still hasn't discouraged me so far.
