Florida shooting...

Nothing wrong with better background checks, especially for carry concealed.

But when people have been vetted and are given carry concealed, let them carry when on school campuses. These nasty little nut job that want to shoot up schools pick schools because they know with certainty that no one will shoot back.

If background checks were stronger i would agree. Right now, no. I'm glad we can agree background checks need to be better.

We can't get either Congress or the Trump administration to do anything about guns as they are all in the pocket of the NRA. So perhaps the effort should be made to repeal the 2nd Amendment. It would take several years but it might be worth the effort. We have repealed other amendments... why not repeal this one and be done with the gun rights issue forever.

Because this would not solve our problem right now. I hope that sensible gun owners come around to some stricter regulations or eventually this could be the case as I feel my generation would do something like that if this issue isn't controlled....or at least some steps are taken to combat the issue.

This is the voicemail I got from my son's middle school principal outlining HIS steps to keep students safe:
1) Secured the school gates and added additional fencing
2) Security guard is military trained
3) All teachers have taken active shooter training put on by local police and ex-military.
4) Regular lock-down drills.
5) Open to any new ideas.

I can't ask for much more than this from this man, except possibly to have armed teachers.

You don't have to arm all the teachers. You just let the ones that want to be trained to carry concealed, and who want to be armed, do so. I'm good with having a stricter training requirement for that. Once the little a$$holes who like shooting unarmed people realize that schools are no longer gun free zones, they'll look for new places to go hunting for innocent victims, like shopping malls in DC, CA or NY.

I completely agree. Just a few based on the population of the school. I think having that being a "volunteer" program with additional compensation makes a lot of sense.

Agreed, but just another common sense solution that would work, which drives liberals friggin insane.

I emailed my principal about the idea of arming some teachers and this was his response:

Thank you for taking the time to email me and share your ideas with me.

I will be honest with you, I have considered obtaining a fire arm myself to protect our students. There is legal limitation to having a fire arm on a public-school campus, but I have to think that people are rightfully rethinking that concept as we mourn the 8th school shooting in two months. I do not know that I would assign a fire arm to teachers, but perhaps administration (under lock and key). It is a dialogue I am going to have with my charter board and attorney to see if it is a viable option.

I very much appreciate you sharing your ideas and concerns with me. Please know that I am and will always be open to every idea that will help me keep our kids safe.
