Foresters and Stents

Is a stent considered "surgery"? I thought it was considered a procedure done in conjunction with an angioplasty which is also considered "non-surgical".

Then make an incision and insert a device. That is most definitely surgery. An insurance company may exclude it when they mention surgery, but it definitely is surgery.

I guess when I read stuff like this, I get confused:

Angioplasty is a nonsurgical procedure where a tiny deflated balloon is inserted into the problem spot of the artery on the end of a catheter tube. When it reaches the scene of the crime, the balloon is gently inflated for a few minutes, then deflated and removed. This compresses the plaque and opens the passageway for better blood flow. Sometimes, a tiny metallic cage called a stent is put in place to keep the artery open.

And then you get this:

Surgery is the specialty of medicine that treats diseases and disorders by cutting, removing or changing the body with an operative procedure. Surgery is performed by a surgeon, a physician with specialized training in operative procedures. There are many surgical specialties providing treatment in all areas of the human body including the heart, brain, and bones.
Surgeries can be minor outpatient procedures or major procedures such as a heart transplant.

I would definitely agree an angioplasty is rather minor now days, but I can't see how it is non-surgical. Fortunately, I don't have to decide. But I definitely wouldn't want to be arguing with an insurance company later that angioplasty isn't surgery because webmd said its not.

Also, you get this:

I would definitely take the NIH as a more definitive source than webmd.com or about.com. If they are publishing articles and calling stents surgery then I would go with that. If an underwriter says otherwise, I'd get their name and time and date and keep it handy in the file.

Check page 5 of Foresters' Medical Reference Guide and you'll see that THEY consider stent placement to be heart surgery. That makes any other definition a mute/moot point.

How would they get a stent in your body let alone a vein without surgery? Have you swallow it? haha
