Foresters Death Claim?

I have my first death claim ever to deal with and just do happens to be foresters. I sold it to this man about 2.5 weeks ago and I had an appointment with him Tuesday to help cancel his old policy. Unfortunately he passed 2 hours before I got there. The good news is he still had his old policy so he has double coverage if foresters actually pays out. The guy seemed to be in good health and had no problems answering the health questions. He did suffer a massive heart attack and the wife swears he has never had any heart problems do we will see.

Once again, your complete incompentence saves the day. If you had been there ONE day earlier to cancel the the old policy, they would not be in as good of shape.

I am quite certain that both companies will treat the family equally respectful and will not yank anyone around the block for months making a decision. You might want to strap in for a LONG bumpy ride though.

It always pays off to be late.;) I am just hoping that this claim doesn't ruin the relationship with the wife.

Several years ago I took an application that was to be a replacement on a Thursday evening. The wife call early Saturday morning to tell me her husband had died during the night. Seems he also had a massive heart attack. When I called the home office to report the death, they had not even received the application. In the end, it took the original company 2 weeks after receiving the death certificate to pay the claim. Two days later, the wife received the check from the new company. Companies do not always drag things out.

What's your approach to getting prospects to switch?

I do not prospect FE only. Mostly it is a referral or someone that has asked me to review their coverage. So they want my opinion. I usually ask underwriting questions on the phone also.

Whether F2F or over the phone. I ask them if they have an agent. How did he/she come to them? When was the last time they heard from them? Was it to review or were they trying to sell them something?

That gives me an idea of the agent. Then I go on to the policy. If it is a Foresters policy I ask them what they know about Foresters. Usually nothing. I ask them if they ever used any of the "free" benefits. Usually they have no clue what I am talking about.

I will ask them about their needs and wants in regard to the policy coverage. Also any more underwriting questions I have.

If it does not make sense for them to switch I AOR the case if the company allows it and/or get a note signed so that I can order any policy info from the company if I need it. I get the beneficiary info so that I can contact them.

If it makes sense to replace the policy I show them why and what I recommend. It is not always cheaper.

If it was a Foresters policy I ask them if the agent explained the difference between a Insurance Company and a Fraternal, If they explained the difference between a policy and a certificate and the difference in guarantees. I also show them (FXquotes or compulife) that for just a few dollars more the agent could have placed them with a Guaranteed Whole Life policy or GUL. If they see this as a problem I help them with the solution to the problem.

If the other agent got there from a referral I follow those back, if they got a referral I follow those.

Long way of saying policy review. Old school ways of an old Insurance Guy.
