Gingrich on Healthcare Reform

My favourite part ...

"Virginia's lawsuit is one of 25 similar suits pending across the country challenging the federal statute"

With all the rhetoric below - can this be salvation for agents perhaps?

"Wayne Oliver, a vice president at the Center, said the Center for Health Transformation is creating a replacement model for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act that will include items such as civil justice reform and the ability to purchase health insurance across state lines.

..."further proves the need for immediate repeal," said Newt Gingrich, founder of the Center of Health Transformation. '

.....The Virginia ruling could influence public opinion, creating pressure for Congress and the president to rethink the plan, said Wayne Oliver, vice president of Newt Gingrich's Center for Health Transformation. Without the individual mandate, there would be no effective mechanism for covering more than 30 million uninsured Americans — including about a million in Georgia. If that provision is struck down, other aspects could follow, Oliver said.

Didn't know about this site. Set up by Newt. Kinda cool. Just an FYI.

Call me stupid, but what does purchasing insurance across state lines accomplish? Insurance is a local event, not a national one. Ignoring state regulations, costs are just different. I can't get a heart value replacement in NYC for what I can get one in Memphis, TN. So if I buy health insurance priced for Memphis, what happens in NYC? Either my coverage has to suffer, or eventually people in Memphis are paying the same price as people in NYC.

I'm afraid you have a certain segment of the population that think they will pay Memphis premiums instead of NYC premiums for the same services, not the way that it works.

The issue of allowing carriers to sell across state lines is but one issue in the debate. VolAgent...it is not about purchasing Memphis priced products in NYC. It is more about allowing carriers to more easily market their products across state lines, which will lead to more competition. If you look at most markets in the US (large or small) their is 1 or 2 competitors and that is it. When a carrier does market in different "local markets", they will price differently. For example, a Blues plan in CA prices San Diego different than Orange County, than LA, etc.

Thanks for posting the link.

I like the idea of selling policies across state lines.
The policy would be a state based contract. This would create who problems with state mandates but thats ok. There would be other problems with claims re reimbursement but that is ok too. It would take a couple of years to work its self out.
