How Has Your Health Business Changed Since the ACA Has Been Implemented?

You guys are making it seem like the commission is abysmal.

If I sell a BCBS bronze plan, I make 107 bucks.
If I sell a BCBS silver or gold plan, I make 175 bucks.
If I sell a BCBS platinum plan, I make 225 dollars.

Doesn't seem like that bad to me.

If I sell 5 silver plans a week I make 875 a week. Sure, that's a low income, and it's not 6 figures, but it's not minimum wage either. I could live on this.

Or is my commission schedule considered high?

$107/month for 12 months? One time?

Not $107 a month. If I submit a bronze app, I get $107 bucks, period, done deal.

A one time payment. What I wrote is what I get paid for one app.

I average $25/month on a bronze plan. 12 months a year. You do the math.

If you are doing this as a short term gig, knowing you aren't going to make any money between 2/16 and October next year, great.

If you are thinking you will make any money post-OEP, you are in trouble. You won't eat after OEP is over.

Are you directly appointed or does your agency pay you that much?

300 bucks for a bronze plan??? WOW. I wanna go work with you.

My GA takes half of the commission, so my commission would be higher if I got all of it.

When I started in health ins back in 1985ish, maj med commissions were 42%, underwritten plans of course..

From a bizz development perspective aca gave me 101 reasons to call the crap out of people and solicit business even if they are under 50ee. The main change I saw was the buying habits of business owners. Doing renewals 6months+ in advance... a lot more health insurance related seminars/classes, it really lit a fire under their butts. So many information requests that we turned to a vendor just to send out marketing material... zywave best friend

You work in a corrupt system run by Florida Blue to line the pockets of both FB and the Contracted General Agent, they don't care about you one bit, you are completely replaceable.

Go ask Bluediamond, who has been doing this for many years, how much he has been paid on renewals annually and then take your 3 months of income and divide it by 12, that's how much you will average monthly for the whole year.

And then next year, at OEP, you can do it again with no renewal stream. It doesn't matter which CGA you work with, they are basically all the same.

I liked the health insurance market before aca, way better commissions, you could count on business any month, not just a stupid enrollment period. Now I only offer off-exchange plans, if they want help with subsidies I will help find out what they qualify for, explain plans, and off they go to the healthcare.gov to sign up.
I don't actively prospect for health, its mostly referrals and a value added service I provide, kinda like helping someone out with their pdp, I use it to deepen a relationship to see if there are cross-selling opportunities, or to improve persistency.
