How to get backlinks:
If you've never done it before, backlinking is a super daunting task.
First, remember the concept of importance of a page is how many other pages like it link to it. The more pages like your own that link to yours, the more value yours obviously has. The less the site is about similar topics, the less the link is worth, but all links are worth something.
Doing recopical links is not a great idea. Number 1, how do you keep up with them? Without software tracking you might make a link, see theirs, be happy, 2 minutes after you see the link they pull theirs. Now you've given a 1 way link to another site. How do you plan on keeping up with that when you have 100 of them? Manually check every day?
There are software options to do that, but it still isn't a great idea. IMO, you link to things you like, and do not worry if they link back to you. You should link to places that provide others with value, not link to places in hopes that they link back.
Some of the easiest links to come by are comment links, forum profile links, and article directory links. They are not necessarily easy to make, it is very time consuming without automation software, and if you don't know how to do that correctly you can easily do a lot more harm than good.
To tell you to do that without learning how first would be like handing you a cutting torch and welder and saying ok, go fix your car. You'd be more likely to hurt yourself than accomplish anything.
