I'm having trouble understanding people with accents, Jamaican accent etc. on the phone, face to face, I dont have problem, I understand them perfectly, somehow on the phone I dont, it becomes very awkward, what? can you please repeat your question? its gotten to where I cringe getting phone calls from clients.

Anyone identifies with that?

Any ideas?

How about "I'm sorry. I am having difficulty understanding you. Can you repeat that?"

Odds are they're used to it, better to be asking for clarification than faking it. I wouldn't fuss over it.

I have dealt with this at times. I will just ask them to repeat, then tell them I don't understand, ask if there is someone there that could speak for you. I had someone last week I couldn't understand and just suggested they come to my office, worked.

Worse than the accent is when you address them as sir and find out they are a woman.
