Is Content Still King?

Something nobody here has mentioned is that you need to keep your eye on your "link profile" (your incoming link ratios).

This means that you should build only so many text links, so many URL links and so many generic links. Why? Because if the proportion of your incoming text links is very high (which for many websites it still is), Google may well knock you down to size substantially (decrease your website ranking in their search engine).

Much of this is what happened to zillions of websites when Google came out with their two major algorithm changes the last year. I had some clients whose rankings dropped 50 to 60 positions almost over night. Previously they had been on Google's first page.

Make no mistake about it -- you really need to know what you're doing when you build incoming links or have somebody else do them. For the first time in Internet history, getting the wrong kind of backlinks can severely hurt your website ranking.

What this means is that you don't listen to the linking advice of your wife's 16 year old brother. Make sure you only listen to someone who does SEO & Internet marketing for a living, and I don't mean a website designer who does one SEO job a year.
