Is Dual Residency Insurable?

This may be wrong...

But since insurance on auto does not extend out side the country why not get a 6 month auto policy here in the states and a 6 month in Canada?

Or find a carrier in Canada that will extend coverage in the US?

If you read an ISO policy, coverage territory includes US, it's territories and possessions, Puerto Rico, and Canada. NOT Mexico, however. So, it's at least something to look at for your policy as well. There is a good chance Canada is part of the covered territory.

i do this all the time,

the Canadians leave their car in AZ, when they head back home, we change the coverage to storage, (comp only), when they come back, we put full coverage on it, not complicated, but not all carriers do this.

99% of them do not drive back and forth, they have a car here and a car there.

BTW, they tell me the the minimum limits in Canada are 100/300/100 and most every one of them asks for an umbrella, they have been taught well.

Do they have to surrender their plates when they do this ? Or do you just let them know you can't drive the car till I put liability back on ?

Not all states require you to surrender the plates. I had never heard of such a thing until I saw Parking Wars.

No, you can go online to the DMV and do what they call a De-insurance certificate.

It looks like the De-Insurance certificate is something unique to AZ. I will look around to see if there is something similar in PA/NJ.

I lost a prospect last week to GEICO because even tho I had a better rate they promised to refund 70% of his premium of 4 months for garageing his BMW in the winter. I called GEICO and asked if they did this and they said yes but wouldn't provide anything in writing.

Has anyone delt with this or hear of other companies offering this? My last resort was offering comp only but he didn't want to surrender the plates during those months.

its a carrier thing, some got smart and realized Arizona is full of winter visitors who have money and dont drive much, therefore a low risk.

as i said, NOT all carriers do this. Pretty smart in my opinion, and the state helped with the deinsurance cert.

Here is the link to the cert, 3 quick questions.

Motor Vehicle Division

They can the the de-insurance cert online in about 3 minutes and a simple email to me and its done. simple, painless and quick.
