Is Full Coverage Worth It?

Dwayne...I just bought a new truck. Tell me why I should have made a different decision? Or are you talking cars only?

BT,
For what it's worth I spent 6 years in the business previously. I don't want to speak for Dwayne but I would imagine his concern would be the ridiculous depreciation that is involved with a new car. The used side can be bought from a personal owner at a substantial discount as well as that is where the largest mark up is on a car lot.

My opinion is it depends on what you are buying. If you are looking at Hyundai the new warranty won't transfer fully so there is an advantage to buying new. I would buy new if I were going to drive it in to the ground only. If you trade ofter, you may be better off leasing and will definitely be better off used from a personal seller.

Hi, I currently owns a 2007 Toyota Camry, bought it for 20k new in 2006. I live in an apartment with a garage. I drive 7500miles per year mainly during the weekends.

Some questions:
1-I am paying 2k per year for full coverage in NYC. Am I overpaying?
2-Is full coverage necessary? I am thinking about switching to liab. coverage.

Thanks

7500miles per year shows that you enjoy some good trips in the weekends during the whole year.
Yes as per my knowledge more than the Others
Not necessary but the option is with you...

I agree...when I buy a new truck, I get the heavy equipment tax deduction that far outweighs any savings I'd get from a truck just a few years old...gotta be 6000lbs though.

Hoes does that work when your business does not require a heavy duty / weight truck like a Hummer or GM 3500 crew cab dually? My accountant says unless you are a landscaper or similar contractor type, that this deduction does not apply? I own and purchased new a HD GMC and brought this up to him at the time and he didn't want to go this route, vs standard mileage.

I love how we subsidize people driving large vehicles in this country, then subsidize people driving overpriced hybrids. It's similar to our subsidies and taxes related to tobacco, it's a mixed message and blatent hypocrisy.

WOW, no feelings allowed on bulliten boards, you could get yours hurt! LOL:twitchy::twitchy::twitchy:

It is still a relatively new car, so I would keep full coverage for a couple of years. However, being from the area myself and being in a situation were I did little driving, here is what you can do to significantly drop your insurance cost: Shop around! Not all insurances are created equal. You want to look for insurance that asks you whether you commute or use your car for leasure (you fit the second category so this give you a discount), shop for insurance that asks you how many miles you drive per year.

When I was in your situation I found great discounts with Progressive snap device; it does not have a GPS, it does not violate your privacy, it actually is pretty cool since it gives you reports of your good and bad driving habits. After trying it for 1.5 years, I can tell you the number one category that lowers your rates: MILES. The less you drive, the lower your rate.

Good luck!

Edited to add: Don't ever, ever, ever try to put your car under your out-of-city relatives or home name! Some people do that but heaven help them if an accident happens! The first question your insurance will ask is "what the hell is the car doing sitting in NYC?". You could be denied claims, you could be in deep trouble! Not worth it !
