who is now selling job loss mortgage insurance that can be bought (by the consumer) without coupling it with a home loan? Hunting for a stand alone product - not as a rider to a homeowners insurance policy.

The government, it's called Unemployment Insurance.
Don't think you will find anything by an insurance company. People would be trying to become unemployed to collect.

6 to 12 months emergency fund is the way to go. MOO also has a rider (No charge) on 2 term products but off hand without looking I think it might be for 6 months.
