Just Recently Got In . . . Get Out Now?

Pretty new to the insurance industry, < 1 year. Worked for Insphere for a while and got licensed for life and health in 30 some states.

I've always done really well at phone sales, and I'm interested in selling insurance individually over the phone but I guess I'm pretty late to the party.

Is getting started with health insurance pointless at this point, should I be learning how to sell life insurance instead?

Lots of uncertainty in the health business. I've sold more than usual lately mainly because of a rate increase from a big carrier in our area and I'm glad to talk with someone and take an app. I'm not spending money marketing and not actively seeking it out.

I would guess that there are agents who aren't looking to completely get out, but are looking at other ways to make a living.

I'm planning on making hay while the sun's shining and trying to build my senior and life book.

I think it's premature to predict exactly how Obamacare is going to affect the indy agent. I'll prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Sales in 30 some states is ambitious. I've been in the business 32 years and I can barely keep up with laws for 1 state and new federal regs. I would suggest life or Med supps right now.

I have to say that I am cautiously optimistic. I don't have the years of experience as some here; nor do I have the massive books they have, but I have a solid base, currently a steady stream of referrals and leads and what I hope to be an effective, inexpensive marketing strategy. I started in 2008. You are starting today. Unless you have enough coin in the bank to get you through the next 10 months without worry, I would suggest reviewing your options.

I also have Plan B, C and D.

Could you or anybody else clarify this for me?

Sure, let's just look at this only from the perspective of the amount of changes that are going to hit in six months. (this doesn't even take into account the complexity of the health insurance business as it currently exists) Be honest with yourself, not us and determine how much you really know about Obamacare. There are some of us that spend hours each day on this forum exchanging information, asking and answering questions and have been researching this law for three years. You are wanting to be prepared to answer questions from people regarding this 2700 page bill in six months. Keep in mind, the majority of Americans don't even realize Open Enrollment starts 10/01/2013, they actually think everything has rolled out already!

Again, you don't have to be honest with us, but you do have to be honest with yourself.

Good answer! Now is the time to do something else.
